Techlab Initiative Boosts STEAM Interest with Hands-On Learning in Nyköping Schools

Techlab, a pioneering educational initiative in Nyköping, Sweden, is transforming STEAM education by fostering student interest through interactive, hands-on experiences. At Långsätter school, fourth graders in class 4B engage in building LEGO mini-golf courses with battery-powered mechanisms, helping students grasp technical concepts while having fun. Mathematics and science teacher Johan Oehme highlights that practical activities like these make complex subjects more approachable and enjoyable.

Led by teachers Peter Lövgren and Björn Wallberg, Techlab collaborates with all municipal schools in Nyköping, providing workshops in programming, 3D design, and construction. Each school appoints a contact to ensure ongoing Techlab support, maintaining consistent engagement. Furthermore, Techlab is preparing specialized STEAM profile classes at the high school level to better equip students for future academic challenges.

The initiative’s emphasis on creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving through LEGO and technology has received positive feedback from both students and educators, successfully challenging the stereotype that mathematics and science are difficult or boring.
