Swedish Triumphs at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards Mark Historic Milestones

The 2026 Golden Globe Awards held on January 12 in Los Angeles celebrated significant achievements by Swedish talents, marking historic milestones for the country's film industry. Actor Stellan Skarsgård won the prestigious Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the Norwegian-Swedish co-production "Sentimental Value," directed by Joachim Trier. His victory is especially notable as he becomes the first male Swedish actor to receive a film acting award at the Golden Globes since their founding in 1944. Previously, only actresses like Ingrid Bergman and Anita Ekberg had claimed Golden Globes acting awards from Sweden. Skarsgård, 74, expressed surprise and joy over the recognition, joking about his age during his acceptance speech and emphasizing the importance of experiencing cinema in theaters, stating, "Cinema should be seen in cinemas." He also thanked his wife and children for their support in his portrayal of a flawed father figure.

Alongside Skarsgård, Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson won his second Golden Globe for Best Original Score with his work on the vampire film "Sinners," directed by Ryan Coogler. Göransson previously won the same award for "Oppenheimer" in 2024, highlighting his ongoing influence as a composer in Hollywood. His win this year was particularly remarkable as he bested notable rivals, including Hans Zimmer.

Beyond these Swedish successes, the ceremony awarded "Hamnet" Best Drama and "One Battle After Another" earned Best Musical or Comedy, with notable wins by Wagner Moura, Jessie Buckley, and Helen Mirren receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. Netflix’s "Adolescence" series dominated TV awards, with 16-year-old Owen Cooper becoming the youngest ever winner in the Best Supporting Actor category for miniseries.

Anna Croneman, CEO of the Swedish Film Institute, expressed pride in these accomplishments, highlighting the international impact of Skarsgård’s work and Göransson’s continued artistic excellence.
