Swedish Swimmers Gear Up for 2026 European Championships with Gold and Relay Goals

Swedish swimmers are intensively preparing for the 2026 European Swimming Championships in Paris, eyeing both relay success and individual glory. A key highlight is the 4x200 meter freestyle relay team aiming to secure a final spot—a challenge Sweden has struggled with since 2000. Leading the quartet is Robin Hanson, the national record holder, alongside Victor Johansson, Ludvig Bartolek, and Charlie Skoglund Macmillan. Hanson emphasized the importance of reaching the finals to gain valuable experience, while Johansson highlighted teamwork’s role in managing nerves. Bartolek, only 17, looks to make his senior championship debut with enthusiasm, as the team strives to revive Sweden’s historic swimming legacy, including Olympic silvers in 1992 and 1996 and a 1994 World Championship gold.

Individually, Sara Junevik, who won gold in the 50 meter butterfly and bronze in the 100 meter butterfly at the 2024 European Championships, is the sole Swedish gold medalist defending her title in Paris. Having recently transitioned to train with Göteborg’s "Growth objective" group, Junevik aims to improve on her personal best of 25.50 seconds. She acknowledges the fierce competition within Sweden, especially from stars like Sarah Sjöström and Louise Hansson, and views the upcoming event as a crucial measure of her progress.

These athletes represent a blend of experience and emerging talent, with ambitions extending beyond the European stage to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, underscoring Sweden’s resurgence in competitive swimming.
