Swedish Shot Putters Show Promise but Fall Short at 2026 European Athletics Championships

At the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Swedish shot putters Axelina Johansson and Fanny Roos both reached the final, delivering strong performances though ultimately missing out on medals. During qualification, Johansson threw 18.29 meters and Roos 18.72 meters, both exceeding the 18.20-meter qualifying standard. Roos described her qualification throws as feeling "good" and "stable." Another Swede, Wictor Petersson, also secured a spot in the shot put final with a qualification throw of 20.47 meters.

In the final, however, results were mixed. Fanny Roos achieved a best throw of 19.05 meters, finishing in a respectable fourth place just outside the medals. Axelina Johansson struggled to match her personal best, throwing 18.18 meters and placing tenth. Johansson described her performance as "very bad" and "embarrassing," acknowledging the toll of a long season and noting she felt a lack of pressure in her body. Despite being only three centimeters short of registering three valid throws, Johansson reflected she had grown accustomed to disappointing results.

Following the competition, Johansson announced she would continue her athletic career in the United States rather than returning to Sweden. Currently completing her final semester at college in Nebraska, she plans to train with her coach and team there to maintain consistency ahead of the upcoming Olympics.

The Swedish team also saw mixed outcomes in other athletics events. Andreas Kramer impressed by advancing to the 800-meter semifinal with a season-best time of 1:46.05, while long jumper Thobias Montler, recovering from injury, narrowly missed qualifying for the long jump final.

Overall, while the Swedish shot putters showcased capability and determination at the European Championships, the results fell short of expectations. Roos’ near-podium finish highlights promise for future competitions, whereas Johansson’s decision to stay in the US marks a significant personal and professional turning point.
