Swedish Political Parties Assessed on Disability Economic Support amid Voter Shifts

A recent evaluation highlights that Vänsterpartiet (Left Party) and Miljöpartiet (Green Party) lead in advocating for better economic security for people with disabilities in Sweden. Both parties emphasize increasing compensations for disability-related costs, underscoring that individuals should not bear extra expenses due to their disabilities. Liberalerna (Liberal Party), despite proposing sweeping reforms, has faced criticism for limited implementation during its time in government since 2022. Socialdemokraterna (Social Democrats) have a legacy of meaningful improvements though appear more cautious in recent commitments, while Centerpartiet (Centre Party) shows strength in personal assistance but weaker economic measures. In contrast, Moderaterna (Moderates), Kristdemokraterna (Christian Democrats), and Sverigedemokraterna (Sweden Democrats) are regarded as less convincing on economic support for disabled people.

Simultaneously, voter support patterns reveal notable shifts. A TV4/Novus poll from September 9 shows Moderaterna’s support falling to 16.3%, down from 19.1% in 2022, nearing historic lows. This decline is largely attributed to voters migrating to Liberalerna, whose backing surged from 4.3% to 5.8%, described by Novus chairman Torbjörn Sjöström as an unprecedented increase. Miljöpartiet also experienced gains, rising to 8.8%, its highest since 2014. Other parties stand at Vänsterpartiet 7.5%, Socialdemokraterna 26.6%, Centerpartiet 7.8%, Kristdemokraterna 6.4%, and Sverigedemokraterna 19.3%.

This shifting political landscape coincides with ongoing debates about the effectiveness of economic policies for people with disabilities, emphasizing both the importance of articulated commitments and tangible implementation to alleviate financial strain in this community.
