Swedish Men's Ski Relay Faces Equipment and Performance Setbacks at 2026 Winter Olympics

The Swedish men's ski relay team endured a challenging and disappointing performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, finishing in last place, 10th overall. The quartet of Johan Häggström, Calle Halfvarsson, William Poromaa, and Edvin Anger struggled primarily due to significant waxing issues that severely affected their skis' grip, particularly during Häggström's first leg. Mattias Berglund, vice waxing chief, took responsibility for the subpar ski materials used, acknowledging the critical failures in preparation.

Following the defeat, team leader Anders Byström convened a crisis meeting with athletes and wax technicians to address these setbacks. Byström emphasized the importance of understanding the waxing team's efforts and highlighted the need for improved grip to boost future performances. Looking ahead, hopes rest on better equipment for upcoming sprint events.

In the men's sprint relay, Sweden again placed 10th, as Edvin Anger faltered on the final leg. Despite Johan Häggström's strong performance keeping Sweden competitive earlier, Anger admitted, "I don’t have what it takes for us to stand on the podium today." Norway secured gold with Johannes Hösflot Kläbo marking his fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal. Conversely, the Swedish women's team excelled, with Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist capturing gold in their sprint relay.

The Swedish men's team now aims to rebound in subsequent events with upgraded equipment and a refined approach to waxing, hoping to restore national pride after a notably difficult Olympic campaign.
