Swedish Medical Products Agency and Uppsala University Forge Stronger Ties to Advance Regulatory Science and Precision Medicine

Uppsala University's Faculty of Pharmacy and the Swedish Medical Products Agency have launched a significant collaboration aimed at strengthening regulatory science, focusing particularly on the advancement of precision medicine. This partnership features a newly initiated research school in regulatory science at Uppsala University, encompassing three doctoral projects involving all departments of the faculty. The Swedish Medical Products Agency, having been involved since the planning stages, now actively participates in the implementation of these initiatives.

Jessica Mwinyi from the Medical Products Agency has been appointed as an adjunct professor in clinical pharmacology at Uppsala University. In this role, she will provide regulatory insight to research activities while acquiring new knowledge to apply within the agency. Her focus includes patient-centered medicine and pharmacogenomics, aiming to establish regulatory frameworks that facilitate the integration of precision medicine into clinical practice.

Björn Wettermark, professor at Uppsala University, emphasized Mwinyi's expertise in pharmacoepidemiology and regulatory affairs, highlighting the enrichment her involvement brings to the research environment. Additionally, doctoral candidates involved in the research projects will receive joint supervision, with agency researchers Robin Svensson and Anders Lindahl co-supervising two projects.

My Moberg, director of the Medical Products Agency, noted that combining the university’s research capabilities with the agency’s regulatory experience will elevate the relevance and quality of healthcare regulatory decisions. Anja Sandström, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, pointed out that this partnership concretizes strategic efforts to boost regulatory science research and education, aligned with Sweden’s national life science strategy.
