Swedish IT Consultant Detained on Suspicion of Espionage for Russia

A 33-year-old Swedish IT consultant has been arrested and formally detained on suspicion of espionage, allegedly for Russian intelligence services. The man, who worked as a consultant for the Swedish Armed Forces from 2018 to 2022, is suspected of spying for Russia since 2022 until his arrest in early January 2026. Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist confirmed the arrest and emphasized that the investigation is in its early stages, with authorities continuing to gather evidence to verify the claims.

The suspect, residing in central Sweden, denies all charges according to his lawyer, Hanna Lindblom. The investigation suggests he may have assisted the Russian intelligence community, although definitive conclusions are pending as the inquiry progresses. Säpo, the Swedish Security Service, reportedly monitored the suspect's activities for an extended period prior to his arrest.

The suspect has a background in cybersecurity and owns a relatively new company specializing in offensive cyber operations. Despite studying IT security at institutions including Blekinge Institute of Technology, he did not complete his degree. While it remains unclear if his alleged espionage is related to his tenure at the Swedish Armed Forces, his previous position as an IT consultant there adds significance to the case.

The man was arrested on January 7, 2026, and detained as of January 10, with the investigation covering alleged offenses mainly between 2022 and 2026. While prosecutors cautiously point to the probability of his connection to Russian intelligence, only further inquiry and evidence will confirm the extent of any collaboration.
