Swedish-Iranian Dual Citizen Detained in Iran on Espionage Charges Amid Israel-Iran Conflict

A Swedish citizen, holding both Swedish and Iranian citizenship, has been imprisoned in Iran on espionage charges linked to the recent conflict between Israel and Iran. Arrested during the summer of 2023 amid a twelve-day conflict in June, Iranian authorities accuse him of being part of an Israeli spy network responsible for bombings against Iranian nuclear facilities. Reports indicate that the individual acquired Swedish citizenship in 2020 and had traveled extensively, including visits to six European capitals for espionage training and multiple trips to Israel.

The Iranian judiciary claims the suspect accessed electronic surveillance equipment and has confessed to espionage activities. This arrest is part of a broader crackdown during which Iranian authorities have detained over 700 people for alleged espionage or collaboration with Israel, with several individuals already executed on charges related to spying.

Asghar Jahangir, a spokesperson for the Iranian judiciary, described those convicted of espionage as ‘enemies of God’ working with hostile nations. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment regarding the detention but has yet to issue a statement.

This case highlights heightened tensions and increased security measures by Iran amidst ongoing regional hostilities, emphasizing the risks faced by dual nationals during geopolitical conflicts.
