Swedish Ice Hockey Referees Face Increasing Threats and Hate

Swedish ice hockey referees are experiencing a troubling rise in threats and hate, bringing significant concern to the sport. As reported, between 2022 and 2024, there was a notable increase of 56% in incidents of hate and threats against referees. This escalation is attributed to rampant social media abuse and hostile responses from fans during games, prompting referees to feel unsafe both on and off the ice.

The severity of the situation is underscored by Hockeysweden’s recent findings, which detailed that nearly half of all match officials have encountered verbal abuse throughout their careers. Furthermore, 33% reported feeling physically unsafe while performing their duties. Compared to other sports, such as football, the risks faced by hockey referees appear to be more pronounced, leading to substantial discussions around maintaining the safety and integrity of officiating.

"The environment in which we operate is becoming increasingly challenging," said a representative from the Swedish Hockey Federation. Efforts are being considered to combat this alarming trend, including educational programs aimed at fostering respect for officials within the sport. The hope is to curb the abuse and enhance respect for referees, ensuring they can perform their roles without fear.
