Swedish Households Struggle Financially Despite Lower Food Prices in 2026

In 2026, Swedish households continue to face significant economic challenges despite some noticeable improvements in the cost of living, particularly with food prices. A recent report from Svea Bank reveals that 57% of households had to prioritize expenses and cut back on areas such as travel, entertainment, culture, dining out, and savings during 2025 due to high living costs. Nearly 69% of respondents felt that their daily economy was notably impacted over recent years, with women and families with children reporting more severe effects.

Although 60% of households say they have a comfortable income margin, a concerning 11% report that their income does not stretch to the end of the month. This indicates a clear divide in financial security among Swedish families. Elin Andrén, head of business area at Svea Bank, attributed these challenges to years of rising prices that have fundamentally altered spending habits, creating a cautious economic behavior even when conditions improve. She suggested this could lead to a slower and more uneven recovery than broader economic data might suggest.

In contrast, grocery prices have decreased by 5% since the beginning of the year, largely due to the halving of food VAT from 12% to 6% in April 2026. Arturo Arques, private economist at Swedbank, confirmed that this VAT reduction fully translated into lower supermarket prices, offering some relief to household food costs. However, Arques warns that overall purchasing power remains lower than it was in 2021, and new financial pressures could still emerge.

This economic reality reflects a persistent strain for many Swedish households who, despite some gains like cheaper groceries, must continue to manage tight budgets and reduced consumption in lifestyle areas. The Svea survey, conducted by Novus with 1,523 participants, underscores a cautious consumer mood unlikely to reverse quickly.

As Sweden moves forward, the economic recovery on a household level appears fragile, with many consumers still feeling the weight of past price increases and uncertain about future financial stability.
