Swedish Government Proposes New Municipal Veto on Uranium Mining in Alunskiffer

The Swedish government has announced a significant policy reversal by proposing a new municipal veto on uranium mining in alunskiffer, a rock formation rich in uranium and rare earth metals. This decision follows widespread public and municipal opposition after the previous municipal veto was removed, leading to concerns among affected localities such as Dorotea, Arjeplog, Östersund, Falköping, and Skövde.

Energy and Business Minister Ebba Busch emphasized that while Sweden must improve its standing in international mining, maintaining public support is crucial for any mining initiatives. She highlighted that the government’s plan aims to balance increased mining activity, especially after the ban on uranium extraction was lifted late last year, with environmental and safety considerations.

The new municipal veto could potentially hinder mining companies eager to exploit uranium and rare earth deposits vital for green technology and battery production. Minister Busch pointed out that, under current regulations, uranium encountered during other mining operations is discarded, but the revised rules might transform this practice. The timeline for implementing the veto remains uncertain but is anticipated to be established by 2027 following a rapid investigation.
