Swedish Government Launches Ministerial Council and Zero-Vision Strategy to Combat Men's Violence Against Women

In response to recent violence and murders against women in Sweden, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced the establishment of a new ministerial council and a zero-vision initiative aimed at eradicating men's violence towards women. This decisive government action underscores a commitment to addressing the issue with the same diligence as that given to combating organized crime.

Kristersson will personally lead the newly formed council, which will include the Ministers of Justice, Gender Equality, Social Affairs, and Social Services, with particular attention to psychiatry. The council is designed to foster collaboration among the justice system, social services, healthcare, and civil society organizations to prevent further violent incidents. This effort builds upon previous measures already taken, including lifting confidentiality barriers between social services and the police, increasing punishments for repeat offenders of serious sexual crimes, and introducing security detention as a sanction.

Speaking in a debate article published in Aftonbladet, Kristersson emphasized the gravity of the issue: "Every woman who dies as a result of violence from a man – whether they have had or not had a relationship – is an enormous failure." He further stressed the responsibility to honor the memory of women who have lost their lives by ensuring such tragedies do not recur.

The council will be modeled after the existing ministerial council on organized crime and aims to mobilize broad societal cooperation for a concrete zero-vision strategy against men's violence towards women. The government plans to announce further details on the council's structure and the exact implementation of the zero-vision policy in the near future.
