Swedish Government Launches Initiative to Develop High-Quality Swedish Language AI Model

On February 20, 2026, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced a significant new initiative by the Swedish government to develop a high-quality Swedish language model for artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to create AI that truly reflects Swedish language, culture, history, traditions, and values, rather than being a mere translation of other language models. This effort underscores the importance of embedding AI with the nuances unique to Swedish society.

The project is a collaborative endeavor involving key stakeholders such as the Wallenberg Foundations and Tidningsutgivarna, with notable figures like Sara Mazur, Executive Director of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and Anders Eriksson, Chairman of the Publishers and Media Companies and CEO of Bonnier News, taking part.

Prime Minister Kristersson emphasized, “Sweden needs good AI in Swedish, and for that, a high-quality Swedish language model is required.” This initiative positions Sweden to be among the top countries globally in AI development by integrating linguistic and cultural authenticity.

The announcement came during a press conference at Rosenbad attended by ministers including Civil Minister Erik Slottner and Minister for Upper Secondary School, Higher Education and Research Lotta Edholm. Journalists were required to register in advance, highlighting the government's commitment to transparency in this landmark AI development effort.
