Swedish Government Faces Internal Criticism Over Gaza Humanitarian Policy

Health Minister Acko Ankarberg Johansson indicated the possibility of Sweden accepting injured individuals from Gaza, a move that has provoked backlash from the Sweden Democrats, who label it a misprioritization. Jessica Stegrud from the Sweden Democrats stated that resources should focus on domestic issues rather than taking in patients from a foreign conflict.

The Center Party, led by Kerstin Lundgren, has raised alarms about the government's mixed messages regarding humanitarian efforts for Gaza. Lundgren emphasized the need for clear communication, urging Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (Moderate Party) to take a definitive position on whether Sweden would support humanitarian aid and reassess its EU-Israel trade agreements. Lundgren has advocated that Sweden should mirror the actions of other European nations by accepting patients from Gaza, emphasizing that a coherent policy is crucial for the country’s credibility on the international stage.

Former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson also criticized the current government, claiming there is a lack of coherent direction on significant foreign policy matters. She specifically pointed out the contradictory statements between Prime Minister Kristersson and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, suggesting that such discord undermines Sweden’s reputation abroad.

This internal unrest reflects deeper divisions within the Tidö coalition, as various parties struggle to align their views on how to respond to the humanitarian crisis while maintaining a consistent approach to international relations.
