Swedish Equestrian Team Secures 2028 Olympics Spot Amid Dramatic Final Show Jumping Round

The Swedish equestrian eventing team has qualified for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics despite a challenging and dramatic conclusion at the World Championships held in Aachen, Germany. Sweden finished seventh in the team competition, a placement which was enough to secure their Olympic berth due to the host nation USA's automatic qualification.

During the final show jumping phase, Frida Andersén, riding her horse Box Leo, faced a tough course resulting in four knockdowns and accumulating 16 penalty points. Andersén described her performance as "terrible," expressing significant disappointment. Despite this setback, Sweden's team secured the necessary position for Olympic qualification.

The Swedish team consisted of Frida Andersén, Louise Romeike, Amanda Staam, and Sofia Sjöborg. Notably, Louise Romeike delivered a flawless round contributing substantially to the team's overall result. The team’s seventh-place finish fell just outside the top six teams that ordinarily qualify for the Olympics, but because the USA was already qualified as the host nation, Sweden benefited from this and secured a spot for Los Angeles 2028.

Great Britain clinched the gold medal at the World Championships, with Germany placing second, marking the competitive field Sweden faced.

This Olympic qualification marks a significant achievement for Sweden’s equestrian eventing squad despite the pressures and difficulties experienced in the final round. The team now looks ahead to preparing for the Los Angeles Games, building on their solid but hard-fought qualification.

In Andersén’s own words after the competition, "Det där var hemskt" (That was terrible), reflecting the challenging nature of her round, although the overall team effort ensured their Olympic ambitions remain on track.
