Key details
- Swedish beef producers achieve highest profitability index of 62 in 20 years.
- Strong market demand and high meat prices drive beef sector success.
- Dairy and pig producers’ profitability indices decline.
- Farmers express caution due to rising diesel and fertilizer costs.
Swedish beef producers are experiencing a historic high in profitability in 2026, reaching levels not seen for two decades. According to the latest autumn agricultural barometer presented by Ludvig & Co, Swedbank, and Sparbankerna, the profitability index for beef producers has climbed to 62. This surge is driven by strong demand and elevated meat prices, which have markedly benefited the beef sector.
In stark contrast, producers in other livestock sectors, including dairy and pig farming, face declining profitability with their respective indices dropping. Cecilia Melin, an agricultural advisor at Ludvig & Co, highlighted that while beef producers benefit from robust market conditions, pig producers are grappling with weaker pricing, contributing to the downturn in profitability within that sector.
Despite the buoyant profitability for beef producers, farmers are cautious about future prospects due to rising input costs, particularly for diesel and fertilizers. This economic pressure tempers overall optimism in the agricultural community.
The autumn barometer illustrates significant disparities within the livestock sector, with beef production being the standout performer. However, concerns over cost inflation remain a critical factor farmers must navigate moving forward.
