Swedish Athletes Gear Up for Historic 2026 Championships: Cernjul and Sjöström Lead the Charge

As the 2026 major championships approach, Swedish athletes are making headlines with their ambition and readiness. Among them, 19-year-old middle-distance runner Carmen Cernjul aims to make history at the U20 World Championships in Eugene starting August 5. Cernjul is targeting a medal—the first by a Swedish woman in this competition since 1990. Across three events—the 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m—she carries strong medal prospects following a breakthrough season where she set six Swedish junior records and claimed two Swedish Championship golds.

Cernjul's coach, Kajsa Bergqvist, highlights the difficulty of managing both the U20 World Championships and immediately afterwards competing at the senior European Championships in Birmingham beginning August 10. However, Cernjul remains optimistic, noting the importance of race tactics: "I think the best for me is if it doesn’t go too fast from the start."

Meanwhile, track and field is not the only discipline seeing notable Swedish contenders. Swimming star Sarah Sjöström is preparing for the European Championships (EM) in Paris—her first major competition since becoming a mother. Despite not competing for medals over the past two years, Sjöström enters the tournament as a favorite, fueled by the encouragement and analysis of experts like former swimmer Lars Frölander.
