SeaPattern, a Swedish company originating from research at Linköping University, has developed an innovative AI-based software that optimizes the placement of mobile turbines in water flows, enhancing electricity production in existing hydropower plants by up to 10%. This breakthrough technology strategically analyzes water flow dynamics downstream of power generation sites to capture additional energy without requiring major new investments.

Tekniska verken in Linköping, which manages about 20 hydropower plants supplying roughly one-third of the region’s electricity, has been a key partner in developing this system. Ola Palmquist, business unit manager for hydropower at Tekniska verken, highlighted the value of extracting more electricity efficiently with minimal additional costs.

Recently, SeaPattern secured 55 million SEK in funding to commercialize and industrialize the AI-driven turbine management technology, signaling strong confidence in its potential. CEO Niklas Boman emphasized the company's ongoing dedication to improving turbine performance and overall system efficiency, noting that even fractional gains in efficiency have significant impacts on renewable energy output.

This development represents a substantial step forward in optimizing Sweden's renewable energy resources, capitalizing on AI to maximize hydropower utility without expanding infrastructure.
