Swedish Accident Investigation Authority Probes Health Incidents at SSAB's Luleå Steel Mill Site

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority (Statens haverikommission) is conducting a preliminary inquiry into a series of health issues reported by workers at SSAB's electric steel mill construction site in Luleå. Over the spring, 34 workers have experienced symptoms including headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness, and respiratory problems, prompting concern and investigation.

Chairperson Kristina Börjevik Kovaniemi stated that the commission is currently gathering information during a two-day fact-finding mission to "create a picture of the events." She emphasized that no formal investigation has yet been launched, pending the outcome of this preliminary study.

SSAB attributes the reported health issues primarily to exposure to fine dust particles aggravated by low humidity and common seasonal respiratory viruses. The company plans to gradually reopen the construction site after a closure since early April due to these health concerns. However, local authorities expressed surprise at SSAB's decision to resume work without first notifying them, especially as a police investigation is ongoing into suspected workplace safety violations.

The Norrbotten County Administrative Board has met with the investigation authority to coordinate oversight of the situation. Discussions between multiple authorities aim to ensure a comprehensive response to the health incidents. A decision on whether to launch a formal investigation by the accident authority is expected following the completion of the current inquiry phase.
