Sweden Unveils Youthful Yet Experienced Roster for 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship

The Swedish national ice hockey team, Tre Kronor, has announced a preliminary roster of 25 players for the 2026 World Championship to be held in Switzerland. Head coach Sam Hallam, leading his final tournament after four years at the helm, presented a squad blending youthful promise and veteran presence. Notably, the lineup includes 11 NHL players and five members of Sweden’s recent World Junior Championship gold-winning team, illustrating a strong investment in emerging talent alongside seasoned competitors.

Among the juniors are teenagers Viggo Björck, Ivar Stenberg, Love Härensam, and Anton Frondell, plus 20-year-old Jack Berglund, showing the depth of Sweden’s youth development. The roster features 13 players making their World Championship debut, representing a significant infusion of fresh energy. Veteran players like Oliver Ekman Larsson (34), Mattias Ekholm, and Jakob Silfverberg (both 35) are tasked with providing leadership and stability throughout the tournament.

Lucas Raymond of the Detroit Red Wings emerges as a key figure in the Swedish squad. After a disappointing pre-tournament loss to Finland, Hallam emphasized Raymond’s importance, saying, “He is a clear top player for us, who will be important. He will get a lot of ice time, especially in close matches.” The team’s tournament journey begins with challenging fixtures against Canada, Denmark, and the Czech Republic within the first four days.

21-year-old Isac Hedqvist, named to the squad, expressed surprise at his selection given the fierce competition, but highlighted positive communications with Hallam as he prepares for the championship. The roster remains open to additions from NHL players who missed the Stanley Cup playoffs, including possible inclusions like William Nylander and Adrian Kempe.

Sweden faces tough competition in their group, which also includes Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Norway, setting the stage for a highly competitive tournament.
