Sweden Triumphs in 2026 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship After 14-Year Wait

Sweden's junior ice hockey team, Juniorkronorna, clinched the gold medal at the 2026 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship by defeating the Czech Republic 4-2 in a gripping final held in Saint Paul, USA. This victory marks Sweden's third World Junior Championship gold, ending a 14-year title drought since their last win in 2012, following previous final losses in 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2024.

The match began with Sweden establishing control early. Casper Juustovaara Karlsson opened the scoring just under 15 minutes into the first period, followed by Victor Eklund’s powerplay goal extending Sweden's lead to 2-0 in the second period, and Sascha Boumedienne adding a third goal early in the third, assisted by Ivar Stenberg.

Despite Sweden’s commanding 3-0 advantage, the Czechs mounted a dramatic late comeback, narrowing the gap to 3-2 and creating tense final minutes. However, Ivar Stenberg sealed Sweden’s victory by scoring into an empty net with only eight seconds remaining to secure the gold.

Victor Eklund, who scored and was named the best Swedish player of the final, expressed confidence, stating, "The Czechs didn't stand a chance." Goalkeeper Love Härenstam was honored as the tournament's best goalie, sharing in the team's joy by declaring, "We are the best in the world. It's magical."
