Sweden to Halve Public Transport Fares for Six Months Amid Energy Crisis

The Swedish government, in cooperation with the Sweden Democrats (SD), has announced a measure to halve the price of monthly public transport tickets nationwide for six months, from July 1 to December 31, 2026. This decision is a direct response to the economic strain caused by the ongoing conflict in Iran and the subsequent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which have dramatically increased fuel prices, affecting citizens' household finances.

The plan allows regional authorities to reduce the cost of monthly passes by 50 percent. To compensate for the resulting income losses, regions can apply for state funding. The entire initiative is estimated to cost around 6.5 billion kronor. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson acknowledged the challenges the war poses, stating, "We cannot remove all the consequences of the war, but we can mitigate them." Sweden Democrats' leader Jimmie Åkesson emphasized that this move is primarily an investment in Swedish households' welfare.

In addition to the fare reductions, the Swedish government and the Sweden Democrats have introduced proposed cuts in fuel taxes as part of broader efforts to alleviate the burden on citizens. The decision underscores a proactive approach amid energy and inflation pressures, aiming to make essential transport more affordable and reduce financial hardship during uncertain times.
