Sweden Thwarts Russian Espionage Operation Targeting National Decision-Making

The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has successfully disrupted a covert Russian espionage operation that sought to gather sensitive information on Sweden's political decision-making and discredit the country, the EU, and NATO. The operation involved Russian foreign intelligence officers and an agent recruited from a foreign embassy in Stockholm.

According to Säpo Deputy Operational Chief Christoffer Wedelin, the espionage was meticulously executed, involving secret meetings in Stockholm including one at a pub where a Russian intelligence officer presented a gift to the recruited agent. Säpo extensively tracked the operation, documenting multiple meetings around the city and closely monitoring the agent's assignments and information collection efforts.

The recruited agent, affiliated with a foreign diplomatic mission, served as an intermediary for the Russian civilian intelligence service SVR. Both the Russian officers and the agent have since departed Sweden under diplomatic immunity, preventing any legal prosecution.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer underscored the seriousness with which the government views this incident, describing it as part of a wider pattern of Russian strategic attempts to influence Swedish politics. He noted that while this specific operation was successfully interrupted and did not achieve its objective, it reflects ongoing aggressive efforts by foreign actors to influence Swedish decision-making. Strömmer also clarified that the espionage activities are unrelated to the forthcoming Swedish elections.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed the government's decisive action, emphasizing diplomatic expulsions as an appropriate response. She highlighted that such measures align with previous responses to similar cases.

Säpo's public disclosure is intended to raise awareness of the persistent threats posed by Russian intelligence operations against Sweden, recognizing the challenges in countering espionage conducted under diplomatic cover. Säpo also implemented measures to prevent further damage and hinder similar operations in the future.
