Sweden Shines with New Opera, Award-Winning Film, and Innovative Theatre in September 2026

Sweden is celebrating a vibrant cultural season in September 2026, marked by notable contributions from opera, film, and theatre.

Norrlandsoperan commemorates its 50th anniversary with the premiere of "The Galloping Cure," an opera by New York composer Missy Mazzoli. The production critically explores themes of big pharma with psychedelic and violent elements, directed by Tom Morris and featuring a strong cast alongside Norrlandsoperan's orchestra. This marks a rare inclusion of international composers in Swedish opera, with only a handful featured over the past fifty years.

In cinema, the Danish-Swedish-Latvian co-production "Woman Unknown," produced by Film i Väst, took home the prestigious Guldlejonet at the Venice International Film Festival. Directed by May el-Toukhy and starring Mathilde Arcel, who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, the film centers on a young maid's moral and emotional struggles.
