Sweden's women's football team is on the brink of securing a playoff spot for the 2027 Women's World Cup following a commanding 5–0 away victory against Litauen. This result puts Sweden in a strong position to advance after the scheduled second leg match. If successful, Sweden is expected to face Scotland in the decisive playoff to earn their place in next year's World Cup in Brazil.
Scotland earned their playoff position by defeating the Czech Republic 2–0 in their match, with Caroline Weir opening the scoring in the 57th minute and Claire Emslie adding a second goal eight minutes later. The Czech team faced additional difficulties after Tereza Krejcirikova was sent off, complicating their chances in the return leg held in Paisley.
Despite missing key players due to injuries and maternity leave—including Kosovare Asllani, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, and Fridolina Rolfö—Sweden remains confident. Julia Zigiotti Olme noted, "We have not played well, but we believe in ourselves. It's just small things in our game that need to improve." Historically, Sweden has never failed to qualify for a World Cup, and their current journey continues that legacy.
The upcoming playoff against Scotland represents a significant hurdle for Sweden as both teams vie for a coveted spot in the World Cup. With Scotland showing strong form and Sweden's decisive win over Litauen, football fans can anticipate a fiercely competitive tie in the next stage of qualification.
