Sweden Sees Positive Trends in Employment and Household Consumption in August 2026

Recent data from the Statistiska centralbyrån (SCB) reveals encouraging economic developments in Sweden's labor market and household spending for August 2026. The employment rate increased slightly to 69.6% in August from 69.5% in July, while the unemployment rate held steady at 8.7%. This subtle but positive shift reflects a growing number of employed individuals, with women primarily driving the employment gains, according to Felicia Holm, a statistician at SCB’s Labor Force Surveys.

At the same time, household consumption rose by 0.7% compared to July 2026, continuing an upward trajectory seen over the past year. Measuring in constant prices and adjusted for seasonal effects, consumption increased by 4.0% compared to August 2025. Notably, spending on furniture, household equipment, and home maintenance recorded the largest growth. However, consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and narcotics declined on a year-on-year basis.
