Sweden Secures Major Defense Upgrade with Purchase of Four French FDI Frigates

Sweden has decisively advanced its national defense by announcing the acquisition of four French FDI (Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention) frigates from Naval Group, a move expected to significantly enhance its air and maritime defense capabilities. This $40 billion SEK deal, confirmed on May 19, 2026, marks Sweden's largest defense investment since the introduction of the Gripen fighter jets in the 1980s.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized that the frigates best meet Sweden’s strategic needs, highlighting the urgency of swift delivery as a key factor in choosing France. The new warships will triply boost Sweden’s qualified air defense capabilities, providing advanced protection against aircraft, ballistic missiles, and drones. Chief of Defence Michael Claesson underscored the frigates' role in future NATO operations, enabling Sweden to support allied maritime security and maintain critical logistical flows in the Baltic Sea region.

Each frigate is estimated to cost approximately 10 billion SEK, with deliveries slated to commence in 2030 and continue annually until 2034. The vessels will integrate sophisticated air defense systems such as the Aster 30 missile and will be equipped to handle submarine warfare with onboard helicopters, accommodating larger crews for extended endurance. The agreement also mandates the inclusion of domestic Swedish defense components, including systems from Saab and Bofors, securing significant local industrial involvement.

The procurement decision came after comprehensive evaluation involving proposals from France, Spain, and the UK. Sweden opted for Naval Group due to the advantages of an already operational platform, ongoing production, and quick delivery timetable—imperative given recent geopolitical tensions exacerbated by the Ukraine conflict and Sweden's NATO membership. The deal represents a strategic pivot towards enhanced naval control in collaboration with allies and is expected to strengthen security in the Baltic Sea, countering potential threats from Russia.

Despite the broad approval, the deal has faced criticism from some quarters regarding the reliance on costly frigates amidst evolving warfare technologies, as reflected in conflicts like those in Ukraine. Moreover, Swedish defense contractor Saab and its British partner Babcock were sidelined, missing out on a significant contract. Nonetheless, the government stressed that this acquisition will generate substantial employment within Sweden due to the integration of domestic content.
