Sweden's Role in Emerging Military AI Challenges and Defense Digitalization

As global military AI technology rapidly advances, major powers, led by the United States, are heavily investing in AI military applications, raising ethical and legal concerns internationally. The U.S collaborates with tech giants like Palantir, SpaceX, and OpenAI to enhance military AI capabilities, with usage already evident in conflict zones such as Ukraine, where autonomous kamikaze drones operate without human control, and in Israeli operations in Gaza, which have drawn criticism from human rights groups. Experts warn that military AI's fast evolution complicates accountability in warfare and calls for better international legal frameworks, yet current EU AI regulations exclude military AI, leaving a regulatory gap. Meanwhile, Sweden plays a key role in the digital transformation of defense through Eurostep, a Swedish-founded company whose Shareaspace platform underpins Norway’s new DIGIMAT system launched by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency. DIGIMAT aims to digitalize and unify the management and sharing of defense material data across authorities and industry partners to improve traceability and information quality during the entire material lifecycle.
