Sweden's Rising Stars Propel Historic Win Against China at 2026 Team Table Tennis World Championship

Sweden's table tennis team marked a significant milestone at the 2026 Team Table Tennis World Championship in London by defeating China, a feat last achieved in 2000. This historic victory was highlighted by Elias Ranefur, who made his World Championship debut by defeating former world number one Lin Shidong. Despite being ranked 70th globally compared to Lin's sixth position, Ranefur's unique and aggressive backhand serve played a crucial role in this upset.

Ranefur's innovative serve, characterized by its speed and heavy spin, caught many off guard, giving him an edge in the intense match. "My backhand serve is unique in that I can serve very quickly and with a lot of spin, which allows me to be aggressive and apply pressure on my opponent," Ranefur explained. He added that while forehand serves are more common at the elite level, he has diversified his strengths to adapt strategically during matches.

The Swedish team, including key players Truls Möregårdh and Anton Källberg alongside Ranefur, saw this victory as a morale boost following their earlier group stage wins, including one against South Korea. Despite challenges such as Möregårdh's on-court frustration over refereeing decisions, the team exhibited strong unity and determination.

The championship, commemorating 100 years since its inception in 1926, is taking place at OVO Arena Wembley in London from April 28 to May 10, 2026, and is broadcasted by SVT. Sweden's win against China sets them up for a crucial round of 16 match against Hungary scheduled for May 5. Ranefur, stepping in due to teammate Kristian Karlsson's absence, expressed excitement and readiness for the next stage, stating, "There is certainly a lot of joy in the victory, but now it's time to recharge." The entire team looks forward with confidence aiming to advance further into the tournament.
