Sweden's MSB Renamed as Civil Defense Agency with Renewed Focus on War Preparedness

Starting January 1, 2026, Sweden's Agency for Community Protection and Preparedness (MSB) will be officially renamed to the Civil Defense Agency (Myndigheten för civilt försvar), marking a significant shift in focus toward preparing society for the possibility of war. Although the agency’s core responsibilities remain unchanged initially, Director General Mikael Frisell emphasized that the rebranding clarifies the agency's mandate, placing stronger emphasis on civil defense and national preparedness in light of the serious global security situation.

Frisell underscored the importance of citizens acknowledging the reality of potential warfare and serious crises, with the agency developing protection plans for civilians for the first time since the 1990s. These plans consider worst-case scenarios and highlight that 128 municipalities have been identified as being at higher risk of attacks. The agency is also gearing up for an expanded civil duty role, potentially involving young people in emergency services training starting next year.

This strategic pivot reflects an evolved understanding of national defense, integrating both civil and military aspects under the agency’s new heraldic emblem symbolizing total defense.
