Sweden's Men's Volleyball Team Returns to European Championship After 30 Years with Erik Ask Highlighted

Sweden’s men’s volleyball team is making a historic return to the European Volleyball Championship in Italy after more than three decades away from this major tournament. The team’s participation marks a significant milestone for Swedish volleyball, highlighted by 21-year-old Erik Ask from Västerås, who has been selected for the squad. Erik, an outside hitter standing 203 cm tall, began his career at Västerås Volleybollklubb and now plays and studies at Stanford University. He also has a background in beach volleyball, having represented Sweden in international youth competitions.

The championship opens on September 10 with Sweden facing the reigning world champions Italy at the iconic Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples, before a crowd of 6,500 spectators. Sweden competes in Group A alongside Italy, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Greece, and Slovakia, aiming to advance beyond the group stage. If successful, they could face Finland, a recent training match opponent. Matches will be broadcast on SVT, starting with Sweden’s opening game at 21:05.

Erik Ask described representing Sweden in this championship as a major achievement for both himself and Swedish volleyball, reflecting the team’s intensive summer preparations.
