Sweden's Government Pauses Teen Deportations Amid Policy Revisions

The Swedish government, led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the Tidö parties coalition, has announced a pause in the controversial deportations of teenagers and young adults while new immigration legislation is developed. The decision addresses recent criticism over stricter migration policies that have resulted in deportation orders for individuals recently turned 18, who no longer qualify as part of their nuclear family and lack independent asylum grounds.

Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency, has been instructed not to issue negative residence permit decisions for those up to 21 years old who were initially given temporary residence permits as children or relatives. Jesper Tengroth, the agency's press officer, confirmed that this directive came from director-general Maria Mindhammar. However, Prime Minister Kristersson clarified that deportation orders already legally enforced will remain in effect.

The government plans to revise immigration laws to allow more family members to obtain residence permits under expanded circumstances and is reviewing the process by which permanent residency permits are converted to temporary ones—a practice opposed by the Sweden Democrats (SD). Proposed changes also include provisions allowing individuals to transition from asylum permits to work permits without leaving Sweden, with adjusted salary requirements particularly benefiting health and care workers. Ukrainians residing in Sweden will be granted reasonable options for continued residency.

Opposition parties, including the Social Democrats, have cautiously welcomed the pause but criticized the government for lacking detailed plans. Ida Karkiainen from the Social Democrats suggested the pause reflects internal conflicts within the ruling coalition.

The pause aims to protect young adults completing their education from sudden deportation risks linked to migration legislation enacted in 2016. As the government and SD work on these legislative amendments, the Migration Agency may delay further deportation decisions until new laws take effect, signaling a significant policy shift that affects Sweden's approach to migration and integration.
