Sweden's Electricity Prices Near Record Highs Amid Supply Challenges

Electricity prices across Sweden have surged to some of their highest levels this year, with southern Sweden (elområde 4) experiencing prices close to 9 kronor per kilowatt-hour (kWh) during peak quarters. On Tuesday, the average daily price in this region reached 2.35 kronor/kWh, marking the second highest price recorded in 2026, following a peak on February 10 when the Nord Pool electricity exchange saw prices reach 1.92 kronor/kWh.

Similarly, prices in northern Götaland and Svealand approached new yearly highs at 1.92 kronor/kWh. In Norrland, prices ranged between 98 öre and 1.36 kronor/kWh, reflecting a broad regional impact. These soaring prices are largely attributed to weaker wind conditions reducing electricity generation from renewable sources, as well as the annual maintenance shutdowns affecting roughly half of Sweden’s nuclear power plants, which limits the available supply.

Interestingly, the prior weekend featured an opposing trend: electricity prices plummeted to near zero, spurred by strong winds that boosted renewable output and eased demand on the grid.

Looking ahead, industry analysts warn that this volatility may persist into the winter months. Some forecasts suggest that prices could even surpass these current highs, potentially reaching levels reminiscent of the energy crisis experienced during the winter of 2022-2023. This outlook underscores ongoing supply constraints and the sensitivity of the electricity market to weather and plant availability.

According to Svenska Dagbladet, the present price dynamics illustrate the fragility of Sweden’s energy balance and the challenges of managing a grid increasingly reliant on intermittent renewable sources alongside nuclear maintenance cycles.
