Sweden's 2026 Election Results Unfold as Government Formation Process Commences

The 2026 Swedish election results are being updated in real time as the nation moves into the critical phase of government formation. Vote counting began immediately after polling stations closed at 8 PM, involving around 6,000 electoral districts. Preliminary results, particularly the distribution of parliamentary mandates, were expected to be announced around 11 PM, covering the 310 regular mandates from 29 constituencies and 39 adjustment mandates aimed at reflecting the overall vote share more accurately.

Importantly, a Prime Minister can only assume office if the parliament does not have a majority opposing the candidate. Failure to secure confidence can lead to extended negotiations, reminiscent of the protracted government formation following the 2018 election. Once formed, the government must present a new budget by November 15, or the existing budget will extend through 2027.
