Sweden Records Unprecedented Heroin Seizures Amid Rising Smuggling Pressure in 2026

In 2026, Sweden experienced an unprecedented surge in narcotics seizures, with heroin confiscations skyrocketing from 3 kilograms to 134 kilograms, the highest ever recorded in the country. This dramatic increase contrasts with a slight decrease in cocaine seizures, which fell from 1,584 kilograms to 1,493 kilograms.

Johan Norrman, Director General of Customs (Tullverket), described the situation as one of extreme smuggling pressure. He emphasized that the current level of drug seizures represents "a new plateau, and it is a plateau that no one thought was possible ten years ago." Norrman highlighted that criminal gangs are now employing increasingly sophisticated smuggling techniques, resulting in larger shipments that challenge enforcement efforts.

Despite the significant crackdown on drugs, other illegal goods saw a notable decline, with only 20 firearms seized and no hand grenades confiscated last year. Norrman expressed dissatisfaction with these numbers and stressed the need for greater resources for Tullverket to bolster efforts against smuggling across Sweden’s borders.
