Sweden Pushes for 90% Electric Vehicle Sales by 2030 Amid Criticism of Current Policies

Centerpartiet has set an ambitious target for 90 percent of all new cars sold in Sweden by 2030 to be electric, as part of a comprehensive climate plan slated for implementation within the first 100 days of a new government. Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist is expected to release full details soon, with additional goals including electrifying 75 percent of new light trucks and 50 percent of new heavy trucks. The plan aims to expand electric car bonuses, enhance climate subsidies for electric trucks, support charging infrastructure, and empower municipalities to create zero-emission zones, particularly benefiting light electric trucks in urban areas.

Despite this forward-looking proposal, current government efforts face criticism. Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari has recently claimed Sweden ranks third in electric vehicle sales among Nordic countries. However, Jessica Alenius, CEO of Mobility Sweden, disputes this, stating that since 2025, Sweden actually lags behind its neighbors with the lowest percentage of new electric vehicle registrations, attributing this stagnation to insufficient policy support and incentives.

This debate surfaced during SVT's Agenda program, where both Pourmokhtari and Peter Kullgren, Minister for Rural Affairs, reiterated the third-place claim based on data from 2022-2024. Yet, Mobility Sweden calls for more ambitious policies, warning that without them, fossil fuel vehicles remain more attractive. Pourmokhtari responded by citing different statistics, highlighting the ongoing need for policies to improve Sweden's competitive position in the EV market.

While Centerpartiet’s proposal signals a push towards accelerated electrification, ongoing discussions reflect challenges in current government strategies to consistently support electric vehicle adoption in Sweden.
