Sweden Officially Establishes Digital Technology and AI Department within Ministry of Science and Technology

Sweden's Ministry of Science and Technology has officially established a new department dedicated to Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence. This development comes as part of a broader government decree that outlines the ministry's comprehensive role in managing scientific research, technological development, and digital transformation across the nation.

The new decree, set to take effect on July 1, 2026, replaces a previous regulation from March 2025. It defines the ministry’s responsibilities, including developing a five-year plan for science, technology, and innovation, managing public services related to these fields, and overseeing sectors such as intellectual property rights, technical standards, product quality, nuclear safety, telecommunications, digital economy, and AI.

The organizational structure features 25 units specializing in various scientific and technological domains, among them departments for telecommunications, digital economy, international cooperation, and notably the newly created Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence sector. This department's establishment underscores Sweden's commitment to advancing in cutting-edge technologies and national digital transformation.

The Ministry is also tasked with leading awards for scientific and technological achievements and managing communication about policies and programs within its jurisdiction.

This reorganization aims to enhance Sweden’s scientific and technological potential and support innovation, reflecting the country’s strategic focus on high-tech development and AI integration.
