Sweden Launches New Dual Use Technology Award to Spotlight Innovation in Security and Defense

Sweden has introduced the new Svenska Dual Use-priset, an award established by Teknikföretagen and Säkerhets- och Försvarsföretagen (SOFF) to honor technological innovations applicable to both civil preparedness and military defense. This initiative responds to growing security concerns in Europe, emphasizing the critical role of technology in strengthening the country's resilience amid uncertainty.

Nominations for the award are open until April 21, with submissions judged by a jury including prominent industry figures such as Lena Gillström of BAE Systems Bofors and General Carl-Johan Edström. The jury will assess entries based on their relevance to dual-use applications, technological maturity, societal benefits, and export potential. Three finalists will be showcased at the joint annual meeting of Teknikföretagen and SOFF in May, where Defense Minister Pål Jonsson will present the award.

Pia Sandvik, CEO of Teknikföretagen, highlighted the award's purpose to demonstrate the vital importance of technological innovation for Sweden's security. Robert Limmergård reflected on the ongoing war in Ukraine as a powerful lesson in how innovation and technical expertise are pivotal for both civilian and military preparedness during crises.

By recognizing technologies that bridge civilian and defense sectors, the award aims to foster advancements in areas like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, sensors, and communications — domains increasingly vital in an era where the distinction between civil and military technologies is blurring.
