Sweden Launches First Doctoral Research School for Police Officers at Malmö University

Sweden is set to inaugurate its first-ever research school aimed specifically at police officers, marking a historic advancement in police education and research. Beginning in the spring, Malmö University will host a small cohort of police officers who will undertake doctoral studies in criminology and police work while continuing their professional duties. This initiative is notable for the number of participants involved and is financed by Malmö University itself.

Caroline Mellgren, head of the Department of Police Work at Malmö University, highlighted the significance of blending practical policing with academic research. She emphasized that having officers who are both active practitioners and researchers will contribute to cultivating a more analytical approach within the police force. Although selection criteria for the program have yet to be finalized, an application process for interested officers will soon be launched.

This doctoral program aims to enhance the research capabilities and academic qualifications of Swedish law enforcement personnel, fostering evidence-based improvements in policing. By focusing specifically on criminology and police work, the initiative aspires to bridge practical experience with scholarly inquiry, ultimately supporting the development of a more informed and reflective police service in Sweden.
