Sweden Fined by FIFA After Supporters Boo Swiss National Anthem in World Cup Qualifier

Sweden's football federation has been fined 60,000 SEK by FIFA following booing from Swedish supporters during the Swiss national anthem at a 2025 World Cup qualifying match. The incident took place before Sweden's 0-2 loss to Switzerland at the Strawberry Arena. FIFA's disciplinary committee deemed the booing "inappropriate behavior."

Stefan Pettersson, the Swedish national team's director, condemned the booing as unacceptable, emphasizing that while frustration over Swedish performances is understandable, disrespect towards opponents' national anthems crosses a line. Pettersson stressed the importance of respect for opponents regardless of the match outcome. Similarly, Tobias Tibell, the acting Secretary General of the Swedish Football Association, acknowledged and appreciated the positive support from fans but also underscored the necessity of upholding respect and expressed regret over the booing incident.

The football federation has decided not to appeal FIFA's sanction. The disciplinary committee's fine reflects FIFA's ongoing effort to maintain sportsmanship and respect between competing nations at international football events.
