Sweden Falls to Hungary After Thrilling Overtime in U20 European Handball Final

The Swedish U20 national handball team narrowly missed their first European Championship gold, losing 34-32 to Hungary in a gripping final held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The intense match was tied 28-28 at the end of regulation, with Sweden even leading 28-27 with only 30 seconds left before Hungary scored the equalizer. The outcome was decided in overtime, where Hungary secured victory.

Måns Fredriksson stood out as Sweden's top scorer with nine goals in the final. The Swedish squad, featuring players born in 2006 and 2007, had an impressive run throughout the tournament, winning seven out of eight matches including a dominant 42-24 win against Hungary in the main round. Two players from Ystad, Liam Hultberg and Hannes Hölting Nilsson, were part of the silver-medal team.

This final marked Sweden’s third U20 European Championship final appearance, having previously earned silver medals in 2006 and 2014. The current team also brought momentum from winning the U18 European Championship two years ago, highlighting the country's promising young talent pool.
