Sweden's national football team is confronted with a challenging decision regarding their starting goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup. The competition involves three capable candidates: Kristoffer Nordfeldt, Viktor Johansson, and Jacob Widell Zetterström. According to goalkeeper coach Linus Kandolin, there is still time before the tournament’s first match against Tunisia on June 15 to finalize the selection, but the process is highly competitive as all three have proven their merit on the international stage.

Nordfeldt, who played in the World Cup qualification playoffs in March, is known for his calmness under pressure. Widell Zetterström brings notable size and explosiveness to the position, while Johansson is praised for his bravery and shot-blocking prowess. Kandolin emphasized that the coaching staff, led by head coach Graham Potter, will collaborate closely before making the final call, preferring to choose a clear first-choice goalkeeper rather than rotate the role.

In preparation, the team plans to give all three goalkeepers playing time in upcoming friendly matches against Norway and Greece, allowing further evaluation. Kandolin described the selection as difficult due to limited opportunities for assessment and acknowledged the pressure since only one goalkeeper can secure the World Cup spot, stating, "It will be difficult; everyone wants to play in a World Cup, and someone will miss that opportunity."
