Sweden Faces Heightened Security Risks Amid US-Israel Military Actions Against Iran

The recent military operations conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran have significantly increased security concerns in Sweden, with heightened risks of attacks targeting American, Israeli, and Jewish interests within the country.

Fredrik Hallström, operational chief of the Swedish Security Service (Säkerhetspolisen), has warned that the war with Iran has deteriorated the security situation in Sweden. In interviews with TT, Hallström emphasized that the risks now encompass threats against not only American and Israeli targets but also Swedish Jews and Iranian exiles residing in Sweden. Furthermore, Hallström highlighted the possibility that Iranian-backed regimes may engage with criminal gangs to carry out attacks on Swedish soil, indicating a complex and multifaceted threat environment.

This assessment comes on the backdrop of heightened tensions following the US and Israeli joint military strike on Iran, which has led the United States to issue a stern travel advisory for nearby countries such as Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt. Svante Liljegren, head of the Swedish Foreign Ministry's consular unit, underscored the importance of these alerts, especially for Swedish citizens present in or traveling to the region.
