Sweden Faces Gasoline and Diesel Price Hikes as Temporary Tax Cuts Expire

Gasoline and diesel prices in Sweden, which have surged sharply in recent weeks, are expected to rise further due to the expiration of temporary tax cuts. The first phase of these cuts, implemented to alleviate rising fuel costs linked to the geopolitical instability surrounding the Iran conflict, will end on October 1, leading to an increase of about one krona per liter for gasoline and slightly less for diesel. A second, larger tax increase is scheduled for December 1, potentially pushing gasoline prices up by an additional three kronor per liter and diesel prices to around 27 kronor per liter, assuming current price levels.

This gradual removal of tax cuts stems from temporary measures introduced in spring and summer totaling 4 kronor per liter, including VAT. However, the current caretaker government, constrained by prolonged coalition talks and a power vacuum, is politically limited in making active budget decisions such as extending these tax reductions. Political science professor Tommy Möller notes that caretaker governments traditionally avoid new political initiatives, making tax extension unlikely unless the oil crisis deepens.

In such a case, parties in parliament, particularly the Tidö parties, might propose continuing the cuts or other mitigating measures, contingent on EU approval. This uncertainty has added urgency to the ongoing government negotiations, as consumers brace for noticeable fuel price hikes by the start of October and again in December.
