Sweden Expels Iranian Diplomat Over Security Threats Targeting Opposition and Jewish Interests

The Swedish government has expelled an Iranian embassy official due to security-threatening activities carried out in Sweden, which were deemed incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The decision was announced on September 16, 2026, and followed the summoning of Iran's ambassador to Sweden's Foreign Ministry to address these concerns.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer emphasized that Iran has been involved in prolonged operations threatening individuals opposing the Iranian regime as well as Jewish and Israeli interests within Sweden. These security risks have included the utilization of criminal networks to carry out such activities. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stressed the government's commitment to safeguard Swedish citizens and national interests, highlighting that the expulsion was a necessary measure in response to these threats.

According to Jonathan Svensson, spokesperson for the Swedish Security Service (Säpo), the Iranian activities were significant enough to jeopardize national security.
