Sweden Engages in European Talks on France's Nuclear Role to Strengthen Collective Deterrence

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced that Sweden is participating in discussions with France and several other European countries to explore how France's nuclear arsenal can enhance collective European deterrence against foreign aggression. The dialogue involves nations including Denmark, Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands, and is coordinated alongside the United States and NATO frameworks. Kristersson emphasized that these talks aim to clarify and strengthen Europe's unified defense posture, ensuring no foreign power contemplates an attack on the continent.

Kristersson further explained that, despite Sweden's recent NATO membership, its nuclear doctrine remains unchanged: Sweden will fully participate in NATO planning related to nuclear strategies but does not intend to host nuclear weapons on its soil. He also reaffirmed Sweden's commitment to the international non-proliferation treaty, maintaining a firm stance against expanding nuclear weapons to additional countries.

Notably, France already collaborates with the United Kingdom on nuclear matters, illustrating France's central role in European nuclear defense dialogues. This newly emphasized cooperation marks Sweden's active engagement in continental security affairs and NATO nuclear planning without altering its longstanding nuclear policy.
