Sweden Embarks on Major Naval Shift with Acquisition of Large Modern Frigates

Sweden is set to transform its naval defense strategy by acquiring large modern frigates, with deliveries expected starting from 2030. This move marks the first significant investment in large warships in half a century, signaling a shift from the previous focus on a light fleet primarily designed to prevent invasions.

The Försvarets materielverk (FMV) plans to sign a contract for four frigates in the first half of next year. These new vessels, costing several billion SEK, will be significantly larger than the current Visby corvettes, measuring 120 meters compared to 72 meters. Equipped for multiple roles, the frigates will conduct anti-submarine warfare, provide air defense, and secure critical sea routes to and from Sweden.

According to Linus Fast, researcher at the Totalförsvarets forskningsinstitut (FOI), this acquisition represents a fundamental change for the Swedish Navy. The frigates will extend Sweden's maritime reach beyond coastal defense, allowing operations in open seas such as the Atlantic and Pacific. They will serve as floating air defense platforms, protecting themselves and other vessels with anti-aircraft missiles, and will likely carry helicopters to enhance anti-submarine capabilities.

The strategic aim is to maintain open sea routes to Sweden and facilitate the movement of reinforcements and evacuees, while also contributing to NATO missions if necessary. Despite their size and expense making them prominent targets, these modern frigates are designed to counter emerging threats such as sea-launched missiles and drone attacks, thus significantly bolstering Sweden's maritime defense posture.
