Sweden Donates Jas Gripen Fighter Jets to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Negotiations for Advanced Models

Sweden is set to make a significant military contribution to Ukraine by donating several Jas Gripen C and D fighter jets, as announced during a joint press conference between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. This announcement comes amid ongoing hostilities in the region and marks a major development in Sweden’s military support for Ukraine.

The donation of the Gripen C/D models represents the transfer of an older generation of Swedish fighter jets that remain in active service with the Swedish Armed Forces, which counted 94 such aircraft in operation as of 2023. The deal envisions the sale of 100 to 150 of the advanced Gripen E aircraft, with Ukraine planning to finance the purchase through loans facilitated by the European Union. Military analyst Jörgen Elfving underscored the significance of the Gripen aircraft to Ukraine’s military aviation goals, noting that Ukraine has expressed interest in Swedish fighter jets for nearly three years. Ukraine’s pursuit of used Gripen C/D models also reflects the pressing need for immediate air capability, while the production lead time for the Gripen E jets is typically three years.
