Sweden Donates and Sells Gripen Fighter Jets to Ukraine, Boosting Its Air Defense Capabilities

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj visited Sweden to announce a landmark military assistance deal, under which Sweden will donate 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets and sell 20 advanced Gripen E/F jets to Ukraine. The donation and sale agreement, valued at approximately 27 billion kronor, is financed by a €90 billion EU loan that had previously been delayed due to political obstacles from Hungary's former government. Deliveries of the newer Gripen E/F jets are scheduled for 2030, with the donated C/D models expected to begin arriving in 2027 after essential pilot training.

During a ceremony at Upplands flygflottilj, Zelenskyj praised Sweden for its steadfast support of Ukraine's defense, emphasizing the critical role these aircraft will play in strengthening Ukraine's air capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson highlighted the strategic significance of the Gripen jets in enhancing Ukraine’s air defense.

Saab, the manufacturer, regards the multi-billion deal as highly significant following years of losing potential contracts to countries like Finland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic, which chose other fighter jet alternatives. Discussions are underway about the possibility of producing Gripen aircraft in Ukraine, further deepening the defense collaboration.

Defense expert Hans Liwång, professor at the Swedish Defence University, pointed out that while the Gripen acquisition will not immediately alter the air war’s landscape, it represents a vital step forward. He stressed the importance of pilot training, which requires several months and affects delivery timelines. The aircraft will eventually improve Ukraine’s ability to control its airspace and support future military operations.
